White Island is an active volcano situated 27 nautical miles from Whakatane and is the Yellow Tail Kingfish Oasis of New Zealand. World renown for producing some of the world’s largest kingfish. The IGFA yellowtail World Record of 52kg caught by David Lugton came from these very waters.

Each year from October to the end of January the Yellowtail kingfish are in prime condition and vigorously feed in this isolated offshore island area.  Targeted with their favourite treats of flying fish, live squid and mackerel baits, these fish fight like freight trains! Sizes regularly range from 15 – 20kg to the odd massive 30 – 40+kg! 

Mechanical jiggers regularly fish this area from all over the world as it is easily accessible on our minimum trip the overnight trip. Mogi Yoichi from Japan currently holds the Enchanter Fishing Charters record a fantastic fish of 47kgs in 2008.

Night fishing at anchor while fishing for livebait can sometimes provide some exciting results.   Under Enchanters 1200 watt Halogen spot lights bait fishing is not normally a problem and as a side dish the kingfish gather for a free feed.  This is mostly dependant on the moon phase and certain anchorages.

Other species to catch at White Island include Hapuka, Bluenose, Terakihi, and big Trevally (NZ and World records currently held are from here).

White Island is regularly listed as one of the top dive spots in the world and is fantastic for both spearos or just recreational scenic diving.

Trips depart Whakatane at 7.30pm the evening before and return  4.30pm approx the following day for a typical overnight trip.  NB: this is the shortest trip Enchanter Fishing Charters does.  The journey is approximately 3 ½ hours steaming to and from the Island.   We recommend at least two days at white Island to make the most of this fishery.
